The October, 2024 Airline Pet Travel Report contains pet incidents for the month of August, 2024.
Two incidents involving pets on U.S. airlines were reported in August 2024, including a death on Delta Air Lines and an injury on Alaska Airlines, highlighting ongoing concerns about animal safety during air transport.
Guinea Pig Death Raises Questions About Temperature Protocols
A guinea pig died on August 28 while in Delta Air Lines' care during a multi-leg journey from Sarasota, Florida to Seattle. The incident has led to internal policy reviews at the airline.
According to Delta's report, the animal was accepted for travel in Sarasota at 6:21 AM and successfully completed the first leg to Atlanta. However, during a planned connection, ramp agents discovered the guinea pig was non-responsive before boarding its Seattle-bound flight.
Notably, Delta acknowledged accepting the animal when temperatures exceeded their internal maximum threshold of 80°F for pet transport, though this remained within the USDA's 85°F limit. While the exact cause of death remains undetermined as the owner declined a necropsy, Delta has announced plans to strengthen its booking assessment process for live animals.
Alaska Airlines Reports Dog Injury
In a separate incident on August 19, a dog arrived at San Francisco International Airport with an injured paw following Alaska Airlines Flight 33 from New York's JFK airport. The airline's report noted damage to the kennel door, which appeared to be bent inward, though the exact cause and timing of the injury could not be determined.
Alaska Airlines has indicated that the incident will be reviewed at their monthly safety meeting with station leadership.
Continuing Focus on Pet Safety
These August incidents follow July's reports of three dog deaths, indicating ongoing challenges in ensuring pet safety during air travel. While airlines maintain specific protocols for animal transport, these incidents demonstrate the complexities involved in pet air travel, particularly regarding temperature management and equipment handling.
Delta's response, specifically acknowledging policy deviation regarding temperature thresholds, represents a level of transparency in incident reporting that could contribute to improved industry practices.
