English Bulldog Dies During Hawaiian Airlines Flight in November 2024
A four-year-old English Bulldog died during a Hawaiian Airlines flight in November 2024, marking the only reported pet travel incident for the month, according to the January 2025 report from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Hawaiian Airlines Incident on November 13
The incident occurred on November 13 when the dog arrived deceased on a Hawaiian Airlines flight into Las Vegas. Upon arrival, an airline agent informed the passenger at the baggage carousel of the pet’s condition. The passenger acknowledged awareness of the potential risks, citing the dog's brachycephalic (short-nosed) breed as a known concern. He declined assistance from the airline, noting that he had just moved to Las Vegas that day and did not yet have a local veterinarian.
The cause of death was attributed to the dog’s breathing difficulties—a common issue for short-nosed breeds during air travel. Hawaiian Airlines did not report any corrective action following the incident.
Ongoing Risk for Brachycephalic Breeds
This case continues to highlight the dangers that brachycephalic breeds like English Bulldogs face during air transport. These breeds are prone to respiratory complications, especially under the stress and varying air pressures of flight.
While Hawaiian Airlines has previously reviewed its pet travel policies for snub-nosed breeds, this most recent incident underscores the importance of ongoing education for pet owners and consistent evaluation of airline practices to ensure animal safety in transit.
